Looking back and moving forward | A recap of the Better Together Housing Evaluation Workshop
On the 7th of November, Greater Whitsunday Communities hosted an evaluation and review workshop for the Better Together Housing initiative facilitated by Coast 2 Bay Housing. This gathering brought together members and collaborative partners of the initiative, creating a platform for open dialogue aimed at shaping the future of the program in Mackay.
A diverse group of fifteen stakeholders actively participated in the day's discussions. The focal point was a constructive conversation about the project's opportunities, challenges, threats, and successes to date. What emerged was a collective understanding of the positive aspects that have propelled the initiative forward. The presence of a local worker on the ground, regional passion and commitment to collaborative partnerships, and the creation of a safe space for members to share stories and vulnerabilities were recognised as key strengths.
One of the notable outcomes of the workshop was the identification of potential opportunities for growth. Participants expressed the importance of evolving the program to include greater input and participation from women. Recognising the transformative power of bringing women together, the emphasis shifted towards a proactive and positive approach to instigate change for the better.
Challenges, however, were not overlooked. Limited housing stock and prevailing cultural attitudes regarding the stigma of housing insecurity were acknowledged as hurdles. Women’s reluctance to share their space due to past negative experiences pose additional challenges.
In addition to the face-to-face discussions, the workshop incorporated online surveys. These surveys, conducted with both members and stakeholders, captured valuable insights that will be crucial in shaping the future trajectory of the Better Together Housing initiative. The data collected will be meticulously analyzed and included in the comprehensive report from the workshop.
Looking ahead, the feedback garnered from this workshop will play a pivotal role in crafting the workplan for the next 12 months of the Better Together Housing project in Mackay. Importantly, the lessons learned, and insights gained will also support the processes for Better Together Housing on the Sunshine Coast and other regions. As the project moves forward, the commitment to inclusivity, collaboration, and positive change remains at its core, ensuring that the community's voice continues to shape the path ahead.
