Learning and sharing | GWC goes to the Queensland Community Development Conference.
The Queensland Community Development Conference was held over two days 16 and 17 October 2023 Senior Coordinator Dorne Wallace and Project Worker Lauren Pattie attended as both a professional development opportunity and to share their learnings from recent projects.
Lauren and Dorne co-presented on the collaborative Youth Out Loud (YOL) Project. This presentation focused on the processes involved, and the key success factors including having the support of the Mackay Regional Council throughout the project, an external organization maintaining the momentum, keeping stakeholders informed and involved, and having patience and perseverance. The presentation included an interactive workshop showcasing the process of conducting conversations and defining themes. It was the only youth focused workshop in the program, and attracted interest for its collaboration between local government in the development of community projects.
Later that day, Dorne also presented her experiences and learnings working alongside Clermont Connect and how this work and approach can contribute to social sustainability in a changing [social] climate. Her presentation included how and why the Clermont community identified the need for this approach and how the work was structured to maintain the communities’ vision and needs. The open discussion had a focus on how as workers we can best re-invigorate and support regional rural and remote communities to be collaborative, connected and sustainable, to ensure community-led services and activities that contribute to make their “place” better?
The conference offered a varied program, featuring different themes, presenters, and approaches, providing opportunities for learning and networking. Standout moments included Howard Buckley's Halliwell Address, the Conference dinner, and Lauren's participation in the freeze-frame activity during the second-day plenary session.
As we reflect on the conference, we're excited about the shared knowledge, collaborative spirit, and inspiration gained. These experiences will shape our community development approach, reinforcing our commitment to positive change.
