Community Initiative | Safe Sleep and Sleep Bus Mackay

GWCommunities has been working to support a recently formed group called Safe Sleep Mackay under their Strengthening Communities work in the Mackay region. This group is made up of passionate volunteers from the community who are all working alongside people experiencing homelessness and who wanted to see some immediate action taken to alleviate stretched services and find solutions for people sleeping on the streets. Their first action has been to raise funds for a Sleep Bus Mackay.

The GWCommunities team has been assisting Safe Sleep with coordination and funding applications. To date the group have raised over $180,000, they have ordered their first Sleep Bus and have their sights set on two more buses- a second women’s only Pink Bus for Mackay and one for Sarina.  

Mackay Community Foundation have granted $75,000 for the Pink Bus to come to Mackay. See the interview with Frances Easton from Mackay Community Foundation on the Safe Sleep facebook page
