Community Leadership Programme

The Community Leadership Programme has been funded as a pilot for our region. The goal is to develop knowledge, skills and capacity for emerging leaders in the Greater Whitsunday region.

A Think Tank group of representatives from across the community have been instrumental in supporting and steering this project.

The programme launched in March 2020 with a series of regional face-to-face workshops (Mackay, Dysart, Clermont, Proserpine), then following the COVID-19 disruption, workshops moved online.

Topics included:

  • Leading with ethics

  • Values and responsibility

  • Cultural understanding

  • Leading effectively

The programme also includes a comprehensive programme for 12 emerging leaders, including a CQUniversity team building skill set, a mentoring programme and an intensive weekend retreat. This programme is jointly funded by Greater Whitsunday Communities, Greater Whitsunday Council of Mayors, and the Australian Government's Building Better Regions Fund.

Project benefits:

  • Knowledge and skill development

  • Collaboration and peer support

  • Mentoring

  • Fostering and investing in local leaders to support our local communities

Project numbers to date:

  • 8 workshops with over 80 people in attendance

  • 12 outstanding emerging leaders recruited for the comprehensive programme

  • 12 equally outstanding mentors recruited

We have attracted a great number of emerging leaders from the community, social, health, disability, education, and government sectors. We are building strong regional connection through this group and creating stronger responses to regional issues and opportunities. We have had strong participation from all over the Greater Whitsunday region.
