Community Information Session- Granny Flats and Shared Housing
On the 1st of December, GWCommunities partnered with Better Together Housing, and local professionals to deliver an information session targeted at women over 55 on Granny Flats and Shared Housing.
Through the Better Together Housing Program we have been hearing from women who are considering sharing part of their home, that navigating the systems involved were confusing and overwhelming. Whether they were exploring the idea to remain in their home longer, through shared physical and financial responsibilities, for companionship, or simply because they saw a need for other women in the community, they were finding the minefield of financial and legal requirements was a major barrier. With the recent changes to the QLD Tenancy Act, and Granny Flat Laws, GWCommunities felt that it would be beneficial to hold an information session covering some of the basics in relation to these topics as well as the financial considerations for people renting part of their home.
The session kicked off with a presentation from Project Officer Lauren Pattie about the Better Together Housing Project. Followed by Josey Commerford with Hugh Reilly Real estate, who highlighted changes to the Tenancy Act including the protections for tenants experiencing domestic and family violence, standards of dwelling and the changes relating to pets. Matthew Kelly from the Mackay Regional Council Planning Team provided information on local laws regarding Granny Flats and secondary dwellings, including the approvals needed and some of the basic restrictions when planning and building secondary dwellings. Andrew Duck from Brown and Bird presented on tax implications such as Income and Capital Gains Tax and things to consider when planning to rent. A huge thanks to the presenters who volunteered their time to support this session.
